Prepping Applique

Ava came over for the weekend. She helped Gramma put the BTCT blocks onto the design wall. Eight are  completed and 8 in process. Same numbers as a few months ago even though I did a lot of stitching in those months.

 A few stems here.

 And a few stems there.

I ran out of stems so have to make lots more. I hunted and hunted for those bias tape makers and do you think I could find them? They were in the designated drawer but I did not see them until the third time through. They were upside down. I found the 1/4 and the 3/4 but where, oh where is the 3/8?

I did 2 more Broderie Perse blocks for my  Morrell.

I think I am going to like this technique very much.

I also prepped a few of the first blocks for Gay Bomers newest BOM from Sentimental Stitches called simply The 1857 Album Quilt.

Now I did not plan to start another new quilt this winter, although I have seen several that I want to, but, I reasoned, I have everything I need to make this (except maybe the time) and will not have to purchase anything, so why  not? And, I have been collecting some of those lime green 1800's prints and a few solids from Mary Koval.

I have several pink reproduction left overs from my Dear Jane Quilt, as well as a few pink fat quarters from the Primitive Gatherings bundle that I am not using in BTCT, so I reasoned, why not? Also, I had purchased  14 yards of some Kona Snow on my trip to see the original Jane Stickle quilt. I can cut exactly four 11 inch squares across.

I decided to not use red in this quilt since I have several red and green projects in the go. Speaking of GO, that is how I cut out the 256 corner leaves using one of my custom dies. I knew they would come in handy.

This will give me an opportunity to practice the back basting technique that Gay and Brenda highly recommend.

Blessings,
Chris and Ava

    1. Thank you. I had to drag Ava away from my computer but once she started putting up the blocks she got creative. I might give it to her as a wedding quilt if I get it done in the next ten years.

  2. I've been tempted by the 1857 quilt too but I don't know what fabrics I would do her in. Maybe actually in the green, red & yellow fabrics since I haven't made one in those colors yet, except I would want to use solids and I don't have those colors in solids. I guess I'll just wait awhile, at least until I'm back from Arizona.

    1. I am tempted by so much these days. I have resisted the urge to jump in and start the Preacher's Attic since I saw yours and I have the book and all the fabrics in a box just waiting.
I kept buying fabrics on most of my cross border trips in the past few years and have quite a hoard here. I kept seeing those bright greens in BTCT and Ben Biggs blocks so started collecting them. Got a few at Lollie's. My goal here is to use what I have. Wish me luck.

  4. You have a large design wall. Lucky you. The applique blocks look so pretty on the wall. Good fabric choices.

    1. It is 96" by 96". I bought 2 sheets of roofing Styrofoam and coverd them with quilt batting. This room is 14'by 14' with a 9 foot ceiling so lots of room.

It's one of those fabrics I found on the sale table at a quilt retreat several years ago and bought the rest of the bolt.

  6. You have some fabulous applique' projects in the works.
Your BTCT blocks look fabulous on your design wall!
Love both of your Sarah Morrell blocks.
I really like your color option of Pink vs Red for those 1857 blocks. Wonderful that GO has a die that works for this. (I may have to go looking for it) Back basting is one of my favorite methods of applique', I hope you enjoy the process.

    1. Thank you. A couple of years ago I had some custom dies made with just leaves in several sizes so I could crank out lots of leaves quickly.

    1. It sure is! However, some days I sit back and look at the blocks on the design wall and wonder how I will eventually quilt them. But since that won't be for a while I don't have to fret, yet. Today I have the little sisters leaning to use the scissors.

    1. Talk about little helpers. I have had little girl grand children here or the past 3 days and trying to stitch around them and their constant words. I wouldn't have it any other way.

  9. I also love your 1957 and green quilt ideas. You have a LOT of time invested in that BCTC quilt and it looks absolutely gorgeous! I'm looking forward to reading about your progress.

Thanks for posting to TN&TN's WIP Wednesday!

    1. Thanks. It has occurred to me to write on each block where i was when making it, what province, state, country and who I was with. I just might do that in a future block post. But now as i think of it, that's what this blog has been all about, the journey.

    1. Straight sets can be rather boring and on point can be rather exciting. Ava decided to try both at the same time. That Cherry Trees quilt will be way too big to change it on point or will it?
She is coming over again next weekend and I will encourage her to play on the design wall more.
