Choosing Fabrics

Have I ever mentioned that choosing fabrics is not my forte? That's one of the reasons I have so much fabric in my cupboard. Indecision.

I bought the book and the Kaffe Fassett Shot Cottons collections. That was the easy part. But what colours do I use to fill the gaps?

And those 2 upper corner blocks are brown and there is not enough fabric in one fat quarter to go the distance.

This is a coverlet not a quilt. It is a mosaic not a sampler. Not sure what the difference is? Better read the book to find out.

I initially thought to pull some dull fabrics from my stash to look a bit like old silk, since I am using cottons. I even found a Yumi print. Never heard of that before this project. And that bottom one is a simple basket weave that can be a background filler. But those shot cottons all look a bit bright next to the dull ones.

Then I see some early blocks posted on facebook and some are using the bright Kaffe fabrics. Well, I happen to have a whole bunch of those already prewashed that I bought thinking I might make a third Dear Jane quilt and I do like the Kaffe  Fassett colours on a crisp white background. To date, I have 22 DJ2 blocks done in brights on white. But these colours sing together beautifully.

Or do I use both bunches? I certainly have enough. And I am not even going to think about trying to make 2 different ones. I will wait and ask some of my friends to tell me what I like before starting.

Indecisive blessings,
Chris

  1. I too struggle with indecisiveness...... Sometimes the best thing for me is to just set my timer for 25 minutes and tell myself I have to decide before the timer goes off. Can you just pick one of your favorite blocks in the quilt and dive in with what ever colors combinations will make it a happy block? I Look forward to seeing what the final choice will be. Janita

    1. Part of my struggle here is trying to remain true to the original if it is to be a reproduction. . . . Most of my completed quilts were impulsive decisions and done quickly. Many of my UFOs were colour challenged and so remain unfinished. I like your idea to make it a "happy block".
Since I started on the Dear Jane journey, how I go about choosing colours has completely changed and I have a gzillion civil war reproductions here as a result.

    2. Chris...after reading your initial post about this coverlet I decided to make it along with you. I ordered my book and am savoring the time spent reading the opening chapters pertaining to it's history and making. And like you, I am very undecided about what fabrics to make it in. I am a repro girl, but this quilt was made with solids and tone on tone silks. To me that is the beauty of the quilt. And I like the soft colors of the original faded coverlet. I have some silk fabrics I've been saving and might add to that with a few thrift shop finds...I'm thinking ties? I love your use of the oakshott fabrics. I'm going to a NJ quilt show in a couple of weeks and hope to find some "Radiance" fabric. Well...that's my plan.

    3. now you have me second guessing using the Kaffe Fassett prints. But a do agree with you the beauty of the quilt lies in its silk. Sigh

    4. And I just realized that I do not have to make the whole thing today. I will start with the first blocks in the QAL and go from there.

  2. Oh dear, Chris! I did not mean for you the start second guessing your choice. There are some wonderful blocks coming together on the Instagram quilt along from quilters using Kaffe prints. And, you have all those beautiful oakshott fabrics. Work with what makes you happy...and you won't make a wrong decision. Right?

    1. No problem. I have made my decision with the help of a different perspective from one of my quilting friends who came by today.
