New Quilt Start

Sometimes Often I find a quilt that I want to make and want to start right now but sometimes have to wait until I get home, get the pattern, choose the fabrics and check my daytimer to see if I indeed have time to start it. When I was in England back in October, I read about this project and could hardly wait until I got home to order the book. What can I say? Its the history part that draws me in.

And, Craftsy had an amazing sale in November so I bought the Kaffe Fasset shot cotton fat quarter bundles at a mere 40% off. Can you blame me?

Today, in blog land, I discovered an 11 month quilt along 1718 Coverlet QAL for this amazing project. And since I already have the project box loaded and ready to go, why not? The original coverlet was made of silk and hand stitched, of course. Will I try to be as authentic as possible and hand piece and hand applique? Probably not. There are only 9 blocks for this month and they are all small and simple. Do I have to preshrink all that fabric first?? I much prefer to do hand applique with pre-washed fabrics.

Impulsive Blessings,
Chris

  1. This is going to be fabulous! What an inspired choice to use the the Kaffe's Fasset shot cottons. Looking forward to meeting up with you in Australia - I wonder what sewing project you will bring with you?

    1. I too am wondering what project I will bring along. Apparently Kaffe Fassett was a part of the reproduction project many years ago. He wrote the forward to the book and the shot cotton collection was made way back then so I figured it was a natural choice. Now to find some dull prints to fill in the gaps.

  2. I can tell you from experience, Chris, that shot cotton comes out of the wash very soft, and it will be a lot of work to get it back to reasonable applique consistency. So I hope you haven't washed it yet! Good luck and bon voyage!

    1. Thank you for those words of wisdom. I am still looking at the fabric and have pulled some dull prints from the cupboard to go with it. There is a facebook group that started up for this. I may never do housework or laundry again.

  3. Am looking forward to seeing your progress with this one - so exciting to see the QAL starting - thanks for the link! I have the book and am resisting at the moment ...but so tempting. I like the idea of ditching housework and laundry :)

    1. The first blocks are very simple ones. Just enough to get started and feel encouraged. I have not yet started because I am trying to finish a course for my doctorate and hand applique is what I do while listening to lectures.
However, I have pulled a few more fabrics out that look good. I took time to read through the book when I got it and looked closely at what the journey would look like. Since I am not using silk, most blocks look at a beginner level. Definitely much easier than many Dear Jane blocks.

    1. I tried doing some hand stitching on silky fabric before and it scared me since my skills were not there. However, I am doing this one in cottons. Taking the safe route.
Haven't started the first block yet even though I have all kinds of fabric ready to go.

  5. Glad someone else is stitching this too! I started using EPP method, but I am not really happy with it, I might start over. Will enjoy watching your progress!

    1. I joined the facebook group and some are starting their blocks in very modern colours and others are still waiting for their books.
