I find such gentle encouragement from Jennifer at Elefantz. I am one of those that compares myself and beats myself up for not accomplishing all that I want to do. I thank God daily for allowing us to live in this incredible old farmhouse in the country away from the hustle and bustle of the noisy world.
And yet, I continually bring that noise into my home by continually having my face in the computer checking messages, reading blogs, researching many things.
We put the snow tires onto the car, and I took the hour drive to a church camp to consider renting a location for our Women's Small group retreat for the spring. We have had our first taste of winter this past week and looking forward to at least 4 months more of ice and snow and cold wintery blasts where I do not have to drive anywhere that I do not want to. I can stay home and enjoy home.
It is November and one of the things I recall learning in grade 11 Geography with Mr. Woods was to enjoy the sun in November. And sun we have now. The other thing I recall him teaching me was to read a road map. I love reading road maps. There is so much "scope for imagination" to quote Anne Shirley from The Green Gables. did I mention I bought the entire Lucy Maude Montgomery kindle collection for $0.75? Then read her biography, twice and The Emily trilogy this weekend.
Christmas is just a month away and we are looking forward to a family wedding and a house full of guests. And yet, I stopped doing all the mad planning and prepping for a storybook Christmas. Blasphomous, I know, but I do not put up a tree of decorate or buy hundreds of presents. I have instead, chosen to have the focus on family and a simple (if cooking a turkey for a crowd of 20-30 is ever simple) turkey dinner. I have learned how to delegate and not stress over a lived-in house that has dirt and clutter, and lots of love. In our empty nest years, I started to give each of our children a large cash gift to purchase a non-specific gift of their choice. Sometimes, I suggested something. Like our daughter needed a new laptop to go back to school to do her masters. Another year, I said her father told me I was not getting them a snow blower, but here is an envelope with some cash. Merry Christmas. This year I will not buy a piano for her boys who are taking music lessons.
I turned 70 earlier this year and that caught me by surprise. It is no wonder that I do not move as quickly as I used to in decades past and do not accomplish all the crazy things my imagination conjures up. We started receiving a pension this year. Crazy, I know. That is for old people.
I did not accomplish my November OMG goal. Fact is, I did not even try. Instead, I have been having a lot of fun with Lucy this month. Too much, in fact. And I plan to continue that for December.
My OMG quilting goal will be to make at least 8 more sashing units. And I plan to bring out the bin of pre-washed fabrics and cut out the next 12 cross block hexies. That one blue one with the stripes stands out of place right now and I want to add a lot more colours, especially some with whitish backgrounds for more contrast.
I already have a lot of random neutral hexies basted just waiting for exciting fabrics to bring them alive. In my uneducated starting place, I chose random fabrics and quickly made and basted a lot. Now I choose deliberately. I kind of like it. But I may want to make at least a thousand more. But I have other goals in mind for 2023. More about that later.
I did complete some of my To-Do Tuesday goals last week. This week's will be short. Prep for the Small Group Racklette Potluck luncheon this Saturday.

Lucy is looking beautiful! I like your take on the holidays and love the ideas you hand off with that envelope. Enjoy the sunshine and hope your month of December is everything you envision. (with lots of fun stitching!).
ReplyDeleteI agree with taking it easy, I don't do many decorations, we've given the children and grandchildren money for years. Enjoy slowing down and stitching Lucy, she's a beauty, happy stitching!
ReplyDeleteI'm not very good at setting and achieving goals either. I just do my own thing, in my own way and in my own time. It works for me and it would seem that it works for you too. Love your Lucy blocks, especially the blue one.
ReplyDeleteLife is too short and we might as well do what is easy and enjoyable! I've pared down the Xmas decorating and gift giving is easier with either money or gift cards now. Your Lucy is coming along ever so nicely. Keep having fun!
ReplyDeleteLucy is looking really good.
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow Anne fan, might I recommend "Anne of Green Gables, My Daughter, and Me". I think the author is Lorilee Carkner. The book was enjoyed by my book group and caused us to read the Anne books again.
I also love visiting with Jennifer. She has a beautiful outlook and shares that with all of us. Lucy is wonderful. I have been quilting recently and find it very relaxing. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteLucy is gorgeous!!
ReplyDelete70 - no way!
Enjoy your upcoming wedding and guests.
We received snow this week as well. Bring winter on!
Lucy is looking absolutely lovely. Seeing all of the Lucy quilts lately really makes me want to make one too. Happy Stitching :)
ReplyDeleteWe like to give gift cards, or whatever the daughter has on the Amazon list for the little ones. Lucy is really pretty! I need to scroll back through your blog to see if you have photos of your farmhouse, which sounds wonderful. I was shocked one day after my husband corrected me when I said I was 73 - he said no honey, we are 74. How did we get so old - lol! Thank you for sharing with us at To Do Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteLucy is so pretty no wonder she stole your attention this month! Thanks for sharing on my weekly link up, Wednesday Wait Loss.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful you are still able to accomplish so much! Wonderful to take time for you, too! Lucy is going to be gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYour priorities are spot on.Family first, delegate and spend time enjoying simple pleasures, such as the November sunshine.
ReplyDeleteLove your Lucy blocks. I tried EPP but don't have the patience for it. Wish I did. Enjoy the holiday season.
ReplyDeleteCatching up on blog reading this morning. I always seem to play catchup. Your lucy looks amazing, one day I might have to do some handwork?? I also love reading Jennifer's blog, always gives me food for thought and a challenge or 2.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty project. I look forward to seeing your progress.
ReplyDeleteLucy is gorgeous. I didn't finish my OMG either.
ReplyDeleteI don't set goals, but it is great if I manage a finish.
ReplyDeleteLoving Lucy and it surprises me how different the same block can look.
Your Lucy blocks are beautiful --whether you're honoring Lucy Boston or Lucy Maud Montgomery! (We've been to Green Gables twice....like a pilgrimage!)
ReplyDeleteLucy is gorgeous! And stop comparing yourself to others and beating yourself up!
ReplyDeleteYour Lucy blocks are stunning. The blue one draws your eye to it, but I don't think it stands out in a bad way, Each of your blocks has its own personality; it's hard to believe they're all from the same pattern.
ReplyDeleteYour Lucy looks fabulous, and your handling of the Hoopla of Christmas sounds thoughtful and sensible. This year is the first time that I didn't buy any toys or video games for either of my sons (age 19 and 22) and it seems so strange! I am wondering what Christmas Day and the day after will look like without the PlayStation going and the LEGOs all over the dining room table, but this year the wish list items were sensible things like jeans, jackets, replacing a phone with a cracked screen that no longer holds a charge... I like your idea of eventually moving to a "Christmas Bonus from Mom" model! Enjoy your family gathering and your "simple" turkey feast!
ReplyDeleteI am sure your family looks forward to those envelopes let them be the practical ones for their gifts. I too am a minimalist in the Christmas department!
ReplyDeleteI have to say love love love your home and to let you know you are living the dream, as you say the hustle and bustle is only what you let in and leave out enjoy your seventieth year! I know time just keeps running on!
Lucy blocks are fantastic and is on the list soon I hope...maybe sooner then later since my hand work is getting done I will need a new project.
